Summary
This chapter will highlight one way by which to improve the mental healthcare for people with psychosis: providing enhanced, specialized professional training at the graduate and postdoctoral level. Specialized training is needed for clinical providers of all professions and disciplines, and this chapter will review the recent Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funded Recovery to Practice Initiative, aimed at enhancing knowledge, ability, and practice among interprofessional clinicians working with individuals with serious mental illnesses. The chapter will also provide an overview of cutting-edge efforts to revolutionize psychology training, with a description of the “Serious Mental Illness Psychology” postdoctoral specialty which was recently recognized by the American Psychological Association, as well as current efforts to create a psychology board certification in serious mental illness.

Summary
[An] uncomfortable presence … who brings disruption and conflict… that is what intellectuals are for.
— Tony Judt (cited in Posner 2003)Public intellectuals have long used and engaged with the arts to communicateideas about power, identity and society John Issit and Duncan Jacksondiscuss the difficulty of trying to determine the role of a publicintellectual: ‘I am looking for what the public intellectual mightbe, what it might become, its tensions, its changes, its history, its rolesand its ideological condition.’ They are quite clear that confiningthe term ‘public intellectual’ to its Oxford Dictionarydescription of ‘an intellectual who expresses views intended to ageneral audience’ is a narrow definition, ‘which lacksexplanatory precision on the one hand’ and is ‘excessivelyrestrictive in scope on the other’. In propagating a less restrictiveuse of the term ‘public intellectual’, I argue that two filmsdirected by Koos Roets can be considered a form of ‘symbolicgoods’ that disrupted the status quo within the Afrikanercommunity.
Roets is not known as a critically engaging media presence, or for writingthought-provoking criticism in newspaper columns (like many of the otherpublic intellectuals discussed in this book). However, as a cinematographerhe made immense contributions to films by dissident film-makers JansRautenbach and Emil Nofal that would change the course of the South Africanfilm industry. The films he collaborated on as a writer, cinematographer anddirector received attention from scholars, critics and general filmaudiences. In considering these films, I posit with other scholars that theterm ‘public intellectual’ could be broadened to includeverbal or published goods that make a contribution to otherindividuals’ thinking. Therefore, I propose it is not Roets'spublic persona that deserves to be credited with being a publicintellectual; rather, it is that his films are symbolic goods that havecontributed to the public sphere, as well as the history of South Africanfilm.
To construct this argument, I refer to two feature films Roets directed:Die GroenFaktor (The Green Factor, 1984) and Kaalgat tussendie Daisies (Naked among the daisies, 1997). These films werecreated and released 13 years apart and I read them as demonstratingRoets's approach within two different socio-historical contexts.

In recognition of middle managers as influential strategists we collected 654 responses from South African middle managers detailing their spontaneous and unguided descriptions of their strategic roles in the organisation they represent. The results show that middle managers generally associate their strategic role strongly with the traditional perspectives on the roles as implementers of strategies and communicators linking their subordinates and higher levels of management. We add the roles of ‘advocacy’ and ‘improving operational performance’ to the conventional elements of strategy implementation, and the roles of ‘managing performance’ and ‘driving compliance’ to the role of downward influence. Focus group discussions contextualised and authenticated these roles within the South African private and public sectors.

Background: The aging society will bring an increase in the number of people with dementia living in the community. This will mean a greater demand on care and welfare services to deliver efficient and customized care, which requires a thorough understanding of subjective and objective care needs. This study aims to assess the needs of community-dwelling people with dementia as reported by themselves and by their informal carers. The study also aims to give insight into the service use and gaps between needs and the availability of services.
Methods: 236 community-dwelling people with dementia and 322 informal carers were interviewed separately. (Un)met needs were assessed using the Camberwell Assessment of Needs for the Elderly (CANE).
Results: Most unmet needs were experienced in the domains of memory, information, company, psychological distress and daytime activities. People with dementia reported fewer (unmet) needs than their carers. Type and severity of dementia, living situation and informal carer characteristics were related to the number of reported needs.
Conclusions: This study showed a large number of unmet needs in dementia. Reasons for unmet needs are lack of knowledge about the existing service offer, a threshold to using services and insufficient services offer. These results provide a good starting point for improving community care for people with dementia.

Current corrosion control methods use coatings which are toxic and environmentally hazardous materials, such as, chromium. More work needs to be done to find a substitute that is competitive with current industrial technologies. Many polymeric materials have been tested as possible alternatives to the present systems. These include polysiloxanes, polymer blends based on polymethylmethacrylate/polysiloxanes and co-polymers of these materials. [1] Oxidized and carbided metal surfaces have been analyzed as chromium substitutes as well. [2] So far the technology has not advanced to a industrially competitive level. Polyaniline is on of the most promising materials for environmentally safe corrosion control.
